STEM

An overview

CFE has a strong track record of evaluating initiatives that inspire and inform children and young people about STEM subjects and careers. Our work spans curriculum resources, enrichment activities and school partnerships, helping to debunk myths, raise aspirations, and improve attainment. We’ve assessed national programmes such as EngineeringUK’s Energy Quest, STEM Crew for the 1851 Trust, and ENTHUSE partnerships for STEM Learning, using robust mixed-methods approaches. We also investigate teacher retention and professional development for the STEM workforce, including CPD and bursary schemes for the Department for Education. With a dedicated team of researchers and rigorous quality assurance, we deliver high-impact insights that shape policy and practice across the STEM education landscape.

Examples of our work

Explorify evaluation – a primary science digital resource

The challenge

STEM Learning and the Primary Science Teaching Trust sought to understand how Explorify – a free digital resource for primary science – was being used and the impact it had on educators and pupils. With growing uptake across UK schools, they needed robust evidence on how the resource supported teaching practice, improved confidence, and enhanced pupil engagement and learning in science.

Our role

CFE conducted a two-year process and impact evaluation, combining large-scale surveys with in-depth interviews. We explored educators’ awareness, usage, and perceptions of Explorify, assessed its impact on teaching and learning, and identified areas for development. Our mixed-methods approach provided rich insights into how Explorify supports CPD, reduces workload, and fosters inclusive, engaging science education.

Impact

CFE’s evaluation provided STEM Learning and the Primary Science Teaching Trust with clear, actionable insights to inform the future development of Explorify. Our findings shaped improvements to teacher support resources, highlighted effective practice, and demonstrated the value of Explorify as a CPD tool – helping to secure its place in science teaching across UK primary schools.

Evaluation of Nuffield Future Researchers programme

The challenge

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Nuffield Foundation adapted its flagship Nuffield Research Placements programme for Year 12 students from disadvantaged backgrounds. The new online offer – Nuffield Future Researchers – aimed to develop participants’ STEM knowledge, research skills and aspirations towards higher education and STEM careers, without the need for in-person placements.

Our role

CFE conducted an independent evaluation of the new delivery model, building on our earlier work on Nuffield Research Placements. Using a mixed-methods approach, we analysed survey data, programme records, and conducted interviews and focus groups with students and supervisors. We explored the effectiveness of the online modules, identified what worked well, and compared outcomes with the original face-to-face programme to assess relative strengths and limitations.

Impact

The evaluation informed future programme design, recommending ways to enhance delivery and integrate successful elements of the online model into Nuffield Research Placements.

Other sectors we work in

We work across diverse fields, tailoring our research expertise to deliver clear, trusted insights. Our adaptable approach means we apply rigorous research across varied contexts, always focused on learning, clarity, and positive change.

Multiple disadvantage

We work across sectors to understand and address the complex needs of people facing multiple disadvantage, including homelessness, mental ill-health, substance misuse, and offending. Our research supports integrated, person-centred approaches to tackling entrenched inequalities.

Adult learning and skills

We investigate how adult education and skills training can support employment, inclusion, and personal development. Our work informs national and local policy, ensuring that adult learning meets the needs of individuals and the economy.
