We are currently evaluating Sport England’s Active Colleges programme. The Active Colleges programme is a £25m investment into creating more community sports opportunities for students in Further Education. This funding has been developed in recognition of the significant role that Further Education could play in maintaining and growing students’ interest in sport and physical activity. The key outcome of Active Colleges is an increase in regular participation (at least one times 30 minutes per week) in sport by FE students and a reduction in the numbers of young people dropping out of sport, especially at 16 and 18. Our evaluation assesses the impact of the programme in relation to this outcome using a mixed-method approach and provides an evidenced understanding of the processes and mechanisms by which the outcomes are or are not achieved. Over 150 colleges and 100,000 students have engaged in the evaluation over 5 waves to date. The evaluation runs until the summer of 2017.
